Poaching has become a large problem throughout the nation and law enforcement agencies are doing all that they can to help stop this illegal crime. Small fines are being issued and in some cases, individuals are enduring small amounts of jail time. As stated in the Bighorn Sheep article, the Arizona Department of Game and Fish are doing nearly all they can to help put a stop to this. So then what should be done, once they catch the criminal? My question to you is, do you feel that these poachers are being let off too easy? Or are conservation and government officials being to harsh on poachers?

I agree, the slap on the wrist does nothing. Revoke there hunting rights and give them some time in the pokey to think about it.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely! So many poachers get "caught and released" and next thing you know, they have an animal carcass in the back of their truck. I feel like they should have to pay heavy fines with jail time.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I dont usually agree with a lot of what the PA Game Commission does, but in this case I think they have it right.
ReplyDeleteMan found guilty of using pastries to bait biggest bear of hunting season
A Pennsylvania hunter has been found guilty of using pastries to illegally bait the largest bear killed in the state during the 2009 season.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says the 39-year-old Wilkes-Barre resident was found guilty on Thursday and was ordered to pay $6,800 (£4,400) in fines and restitution, plus court costs.
Game Commission officials say the hunter admitted using bait to help him attract and kill the 707-pound bear.
They said he first raised suspicions when he was spotted a week before the hunting season driving a truck loaded with pastries through a heavily hunted area.
The man also faces the loss of hunting privileges for three years.
Wow! That would be quite a site to watch a pastry truck drive deep into the woods. I'd say he was determined to get that bear! Very impressive size I imagine as well, weighing in at 707 lbs!
ReplyDeleteActually, speaking of bears. Did anyone hear of the bear that was killed down in Florida, and had it's claws removed? It is illegal to have in possession, any body part from a bear, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The agents believe that the bear was hit with a Honda Accord (due to the remains of a Honda Accord left by the body), then I suppose they thought they would just take the claws as a souvenir. If only they had left their license plate along with the bumper!
